What is Queer Atmospheres?
Queer Atmospheres is a monthly newsletter where I - an expert on gay media - come to write about recent things I’ve “queered.” The newsletter will consist of op-eds ranging from why Taylor Swift’s album Lover was written about It Chapter 2 (2019), to why the relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes is a modern shakespeare tale. Among op-eds will be lists ranking gay moments in certain franchises and films. As a “very online” gay person, “queering” media is something I’ve done since I was 13, and also something I tend to write about professionally. In Queer Atmospheres you’ll get a monthly dose of gay shit in your inbox, and hopefully look at certain pieces of media differently.
Who is Queer Atmospheres?
I’m a (annoying) freelance pop culture writer (and film student) hailing from Canada. I began writing in 2019 but before that you would have probably found me getting in Twitter arguments with people denying the inherent queerness of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. Since my writing career began, I’ve published pieces about music, film and how the two intersect for places such as Obscur Media, Adolescent and Next Best Picture.
Why is Queer Atmospheres?
As a gay person whose career and life revolves around media consumption, it’s easy for me to find queer text and subtext in everything. Why does this Nirvana song remind me about Richie Tozier and Eddie Kaspbrak? Are Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth Gay? What’s up with Theon Greyjoy and Robb Stark? I’m here to answer all those question you may have thought about for even a brief moment, and turn them into long-form think-pieces. If any of what I’ve said makes sense to you, subscribe! You can also follow me on Twitter for your daily dose of gay ramblings, check out my portfolio, and shoot me an email here.
